1. Overview

Strange Video Editor (“the Software”) is a local-first timeline video editor for Windows desktop via Steam. Core editing and export can work offline. Optional Pixabay stock search is served through the developer’s backend — no user API key is required. On-device ML features use MIT/Apache-2.0 models. Provider terms apply when those optional features are used.

2. Purchase & license (Steam)

  • Sold and distributed via Steam. Payment, refunds, and pricing follow the Steam Subscriber Agreement and store policies.
  • Digital content: delivery is deemed to begin at the earliest of adding the product to your Steam library, starting the download, or installing/launching the app, and the right of withdrawal may be restricted after that point (Korean E-Commerce Act, Art. 17(2)5). Statutory rights for defective or misdescribed products are preserved — full details in the Withdrawal & Refund Policy (/refund).
  • Typical introductory list price: a one-time USD 40 purchase that may rise later; occasional discount promotions may apply (see the Steam store page for the live price). One payment includes lifetime use and free future updates — no repurchase for version upgrades.
  • Redistribution, cracking, and license sharing are prohibited.
  • This software is sold on Steam only — there is no separate browser-extension store edition.

3. Your content & copyright

You are solely responsible for rights and compliance of all media you import, edit, and export. You are also responsible for using, publishing, and clearing rights in optional AI outputs (images, captions, short-form timelines).

3-1. 2D buddy characters

The on-screen 2D buddies (tabby cat, piglet, hamster, cyclops eggs and the other built-in characters) are vector illustrations drawn by the operator, and Blackcanes holds their copyright. The former Meshy 3D hamster is no longer shipped (record: legal/MESHY-ASSET-NOTICE.md). Permission comes in two layers:

  • Rendered output: a buddy appearing inside a video or screen capture made with the app may be used freely for any purpose, including monetised videos, advertising and content for sale, with no attribution required.
  • Character files (artwork, rigs, part data, presets): usable only inside the app and shareable only through the Steam Workshop. Extracting them to redistribute or sell, using them in other software, stock-asset sites or merchandise, or selling a character on its own is not permitted.
  • Buddy presets shared by users on the Steam Workshop follow the same split: the uploader lets other users use the preset in the app and put the rendered buddy in their own videos (monetised included, no attribution); the preset data itself stays inside the app and the Workshop. Hosting, uploader identity and copyright notices for Workshop items are handled by Valve under the Steam Workshop legal agreement.

4. Codecs & patents

  • New exports use VP9 + Opus (WebM) or H.264 + AAC (MP4). The Software does not ship x264 or an OpenH264 DLL in the installer.
  • H.264/AVC patent-licensing obligations may vary by the user’s environment. This software follows common industry practice of using encoders provided by the OS and hardware. Not legal advice.
  • Preview of legacy MP4/H.264 inputs may use Chromium/Electron built-in decoders on your device.
  • Cisco’s BINARY_LICENSE MPEG-LA language applies only to Cisco’s official OpenH264 binary (optional Settings download), not to hardware encode.

5. Optional online features

  • Auto captions / background removal / object pick: on-device ML (OpenAI Whisper MIT / BEN2 MIT / Meta SAM 2 Apache-2.0) runs on this PC and only processes your own media; model weights may download from Hugging Face once.
  • The Software does not currently generate AI content (images, voices, or scripts). If generative features are added in a future update, separate notices and terms will be provided. Creating deepfakes, face swaps, or imitations of real people’s faces or voices with the Software is prohibited.
  • Pixabay stock search: served through the developer’s backend with no user API key; you must comply with Pixabay’s content license for any stock media you use.

6. Recording & privacy

Screen, camera, and microphone capture run locally only. The desktop app asks you to choose which screen/window to capture and (on Windows) whether to include system loopback audio. See the Steam Privacy Policy on this site.

The Software is provided “as is.” You are responsible for platform upload compliance and copyright. Liability may be limited to the extent permitted by law and your Steam purchase.
